Can GitHub censor Bitcoin code?

In the last few days there’s been a heated discussion about GitHub’s recent decision to remove a project and all its various forks from its platform;

The question that arises is: could the same happen with Bitcoin Evolution code or other cryptos?

The hosting service for software projects has put into practice what is the censorship of a code to prevent it from spreading and the question is therefore whether it could happen again.

The triggering case concerns YouTube libraries, which allow to recall video data to get information, in this case the songs of the video clips that we find on this platform.

The thing is quite unusual because that kind of libraries recall a request to the platform and it is similar to what third parties do to integrate YouTube videos on their site, so it is unlikely to be a copyright infringement, even if this was the official reason.

What if Github deletes the Bitcoin code?

The story has certainly not gone unnoticed by the community of those who use GitHub to publish the code of their projects to make it available to everyone by making it open source and open to all, as in the case of Bitcoin.

For this reason, many people are wondering if even all crypto projects that have published their code on this platform are at risk of censorship, since we are talking about a centralized platform in the hands of Microsoft.

The event is starting to worry a lot of people as they might come under pressure from GitHub to remove any crypto from their platform, putting in trouble practically all devs and more.

But if it’s true that there are centralized platforms like Github, it’s also true that there are as many decentralized methods in each sector, for example using the IPFS protocol is a valid alternative and there are several decentralized video platforms already active.

Let us not forget that in December 2019 the same YouTube took down several crypto themed video channels emptying them from all content that dealt with crypto and blockchain. It was a very heavy and unprecedented censorship, something that many have seen as a sign that this platform is not reliable since the content can be removed by them at will.

Finally we can only point out that if the source code is open but is on GitHub, then we could even go so far as to say that the code is not really open source since it is on a centralized platform.
