18.) What happens if the disc becomes damaged and data cannot be read. Is it possible to recover the data?
19.) How can I use the disc under Windows XP?

1.) What is 'EncryptEase'?

'EncryptEase' is a disc that encrypts and records data in its CD-R section and provides strong security with a setup password.
Its simple operation is user-friendly, and you can securely store, move, or pass on your important data.

2.) What is 'RR'?

'RR' is a new single optical disc that unites a CD-R and a CD-ROM. It is an epoch-making disc that has mobilized the optical disc technologies Ricoh has built up over many years.

3.) What is required when I use an "EncryptEase" disc?

- A drive that supports CD-R media read and write operations
  (except NEC ND-5100A)
- One of the following OS environments is needed:
   Windows 98 SE (except Windows 98), Windows ME,
   Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 4), or Windows XP Home    Edition/Professional (Service Pack 1a, Service Pack 2)

4.) Do I need separate writing software when I write data to an "EncryptEase" disc?

You do not need to provide your own writing software because an "EncryptEase" disc includes the writing function.
Note that when you use an "EncryptEase" disc for the first time, the necessary drivers will be installed on the hard disk of your personal computer when you set the disc into the drive.

5.) Can I use an "EncryptEase" disc on a Macintosh?

No, you can not use it on any Macintosh machines, including the new Mac mini and any new Mac with Intel Core Duo.

Ensure that your computer uses one of the following Windows environments:
Windows 98 SE (except Windows 98), Windows Me,
Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 4), or
Windows XP Home Edition/Professional (Service Pack 1a/Service Pack 2)

6.) How much writable capacity does an "EncryptEase" disc have?

It has a writable capacity of about 600 MB.
The more often you write data to your disc, the more data management information builds up in the disc in addition to the original data. Note that the writable capacity for data is less than it looks for this reason.

7.) What is the maximum number of write (append) operations?

You can write (or append) data up to 20 times.
Note that this depends on the size of the written data, so the maximum number may be less than 20.

8.) I plan to use an "EncryptEase" disc in a Windows XP environment. I am wondering if users without OS administrator rights can use it.?

When writing to the disc:
When writing to the disc for the first time, the PC needs to be logged in with administrator authority, in order to install the necessary files (driver).
Restart the PC when the installation process has completed. After the restarting, the PC can be logged in as any user rights.

When extracting the written data to a hard disc drive:
If you have already used the Encryptease with the PC;
The driver is already installed, the user can login with any user rights. All that is required is to enter the password that has been set up for the 'EncryptEase' disc.

If the PC is used for the first time with EncryptEase:

Windows 2000/XP
* log in as administrator;
All you need to do is enter the password that has been set up for the 'EncryptEase' disc.

* log in as limited user;
before extracting the data to the hard disc, the PC must have the driver installed. In order to install the driver the user must be logged in with administrator authority.Once the driver is installed, the EncryptEase disc can be used with any user level. All that is required is to enter the password that has been set up for the "EncryptEase" disc.

Windows 98SE/Me
* log in with any user level;
All you need to do is enter the password that has been set up for the 'EncryptEase' disc.

9.) Can I change my password after I have set it up?

A password must be set for each "EncryptEase" disc.
Note that you can neither change your password to a different one nor deselect it once you have set it up.

10.) What if I forgot my password?

If you forget your password, you will not be able to write to your "EncryptEase" disc or move files (or read data) from the disc to the hard disk. In addition, you will not be able to perform data recovery at all. Ensure that your password is handled with extreme care.

11.) What happens if I enter the wrong password?

There is no lockout feature if the wrong password is entered. You have three attempts to enter the password, after the application will automatically close. If you restart the application you will be able to enter the password again.

12.) What kind of driver is installed and why?

EncryptEase has its own encryption/decryption software on the disc and it does not rely on the PC environment so it can be used anywhere, anytime. It is necessary when using "EncryptEase" for the first time, to install drivers on your PC.

The driver is installed for two purposes;
1. To write on the disc
2. To verify the disc’s authenticity (this function used only with Windows 2000/XP logged in as limited user)

They are installed at the following locations;*
98 SE/Me: C:\Windows\system\iosubsys\cdrbsvsd.vxd
2000/XP: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\cdrbsvsd.sys
* based on Windows directory at c:\windows

13.) Is it possible to remove the driver?

No, there is no special utility available to uninstall the driver. If you are using Windows 2000/XP you can set a ‘restore point’ in the operating system.

14.) The driver cannot be installed, what can I do?

In order to install the driver, the user must be logged in with Administrator rights with Windows 2000/XP.

15.) Can I use the disc on the new Mac mini or any new Mac with Intel Core Duo?

No, you can not use it on any Macintosh machines. Ensure that your computer uses one of the following Windows environments:
Windows 98 SE (except Windows 98), Windows Me,
Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 4) or higher
Windows XP Home Edition/Professional (Service Pack 1a/Service Pack 2)

16.) Can I copy the disc using disc copy software like CloneCD, etc.?

Data cannot be read if the disc has been copied.
EncryptEase uses the unique Ricoh Hybrid disc copy guard function, which does 'not allow the copied data to be read', ensuring a high level of security and thus maintains high compatibility. Even if the disc has been copied, data cannot be accessed.

Ricoh's new technology includes a 'physical key' in the data, which cannot be copied under any circumstance.
Before accessing the data, the program checks the 'Physical Key' and its authenticity.
If the key is identified as 'False', the operation will stop and protect the data from being read.
Even if the disc has been fully copied, the data cannot be read.

17.) Why is the password only 10 characters?. Does not seem like very high security?

Long passwords can be easily forgotten. Not only is the data protected with the password but also with the hybrid technology and Ricoh's original Encryption technology ‘RICOH original method block cipher’ both ensure a high level of security.

18.) What happens if the disc becomes damaged and data cannot be read. Is it possible to recover the data?

No, it is not possible to recover the data. EncryptEase ensures a high level of security with the unique Ricoh Hybrid disc copy guard function, which does 'not allow the copied data to be read'.

This Ricoh's new technology includes a 'physical key' in the data, which cannot be copied under any circumstance.

19.) How can I use the disc under Windows XP?

When extracting the written data to a hard drive:
If you have already used the Encryptease;
The driver is already installed, the user can login with any user rights. All that is required is to enter the password that has been set up for the "EncryptEase" disc.

If the PC is used for the first time with EncryptEase:

* log in as limited user;

All that is required is to enter the password that has been set up for the "EncryptEase" disc.
