Troubleshooting for DVD media

For blank discs (before writing)
1.) The disc cannot be read or mounted.

Writing problems
1.) A disc cannot be written to.
2.) When I try to write data with packet writing software in Windows XP, it doesn't write and a shortcut appears.

Problems reading a disc that you wrote.
1.) Writing on a disc was completed successfully, but the disc cannot be read even by the same writer.
2.) Writing on a DVD-R disc with my home DVD recorder was completed successfully, and the disc played back without a problem. But another DVD drive in a different computer cannot recognize the same disc.

For blank discs (before writing)

1.) The disc cannot be read or mounted.

A case: I just purchased a Ricoh disc and set it in the drive/recorder, but the drive/recorder will not mount the disc. The drive/recorder just repeatedly access the disc, or ejects it.

The drive/recorder may not meet the standard of the disc that you have. Please check the standards of both your drive/recorder and the media.

Currently, DVD-RW or DVD-RAM discs are not available from Ricoh.

Writing problems

1.) A disc cannot be written to.

Check the following points.

  • Does your drive/recorder support the standard of the disc you have? Refer the following page.
  • Please check the verified media vendor list from your drive/recorder manufacturer. Or can you ask the manufacturer if the Ricoh disc model has been tested by them?
  • Are you sure that the data you intend to write is not protected from unauthorized copying? You are not allowed to write any copyright protected data.
  • Please try a firmware upgrade for your drive/recorder, if it is available. Firmware upgrades for Ricoh drives are available from here.
  • Review if your system or writing software is working properly. For example,
    • If one is available, please update your writing software.
    • If you have installed more than one writing software package, try uninstalling all of them and reinstalling just one of them.
    • If any anti-virus software or virtual CD software is installed on your computer, try a software update.
    • Quit all other programs except the writing software. Especially, close any memory resident programs.

2.) When I try to write data with packet writing software in Windows XP, it doesn't write and a shortcut appears.

It may be that the Windows XP recording option is enabled. Try again after removing the option.

Right click on MyComputer, then click Properties. Click the Recording Tab, then remove "Enable CD recording on this drive" to disable the option.

For details, please consult your software manual or ask the supplier.

Problems reading a disc that you wrote.

1.) Writing on a disc was completed successfully, but the disc cannot be read even by the same writer.

Check the following points.

  • Please check the verified media vendor list from your drive/recorder manufacturer. Or can you ask the manufacturer if the Ricoh disc model has been tested by them?
    • For instance, if the Ricoh disc model you have is not included in their verified media, it may not write properly, and it may cause a reading problem.
  • Please try a firmware upgrade for your drive/recorder, if one is available. Firmware upgrades for Ricoh drives are available from here.
  • If one is available, please try an update for your writing software.

2.) Writing on a DVD-R disc with my home DVD recorder was completed successfully, and the disc played back without a problem. But another DVD drive in a different computer cannot recognize the same disc.

Check the following points.

  • Please check if the DVD-R disc has been finalized. You will be able to see the current mode of the disc with the DVD recorder.
  • In order to read a DVD-R disc that was written by a DVD home recorder using another DVD player, disc finalizing by the DVD home recorder is required.
  • Although a DVD-R disc is finalized, even though you are trying to read it in a computer, it may not be recognized if the DVD drive does not support DVD-R discs.
